The Cayambe Ice Race is a modern re-enactment of an ancient tradition. In a gruelling contest, the Ice race pits
man against ice, 17 miles and time. The challenge:- to transport ice cut from the glacier of Caymabe mountain, the highest
mountain on the equator, to the town of Cayambe. The contest has it's origins in requests for Ice for fiestas and sacred
rituals. Obliging locals, looking to earn an honest fee would
bundled the ice up in grass, animal skins and other material to help keep it from melting.
The race is an annual event and is not for the faint hearted. The race starts at a breath-taking 16,500 feet where
the fierce suns rays beat down on you. To take part, you will need to do some acclimatization hikes in the week
before the race. Our program will put you in a position to undertake the race and provide the necessary back up and support
during and after.
The race usually takes place in August. In addition to the Ice Race, a downhill race (without the ice) and a
half marathon (actually 17.5 miles) take place. There is also an adventure competition with 4 disciplines over the 3-day
period. Think you are up to it?
